I’ve been involved in a range of technical writing projects — including help systems, tutorials, user manuals, quick start guides, corporate training classes, and online courses for higher education.
My most recent projects have included:
- Creating updated topics from existing ones based on a new organizational structure for an updated UI.
- Editing content to adhere to US English and software-industry, technical-writing standards.
- Developing (and subsequently updating) user reference manuals, quick start guides, checklists, and video tutorials for a cloud-based (and iOS-based) inventory management system.
- Developing help systems for cloud-based applications (uncompiled HTML help, HTML5, Confluence, Paligo, desk.com, and WordPress help-oriented themes).
- Writing and updating user manuals, quick start guides, online help for Mac OS X, iOS, Windows, and cloud-based software products.
- Editing existing user manuals, articles, and online content (written by others) for clarity, conciseness, correct English grammar, and adherence to industry standards.
- Editing image descriptions for a variety of textbooks (including statistics for social sciences).
- Consulting about, updating and developing small CMS-based websites.
- Cleaning up Flare files converted from FrameMaker content to adhere to new styles in Flare output.
Past projects have included:
- Developing descriptions of images in STEM and basic Economics textbooks for sight-impaired students.
- Developing websites for individuals and small non-profit organizations as static sites and in WordPress or other CMSs.
- Developing help systems and tutorials for applications on Mac OS X (as Apple Help) and Windows (as HTML Help, uncompiled HTML help) systems.
- Converting existing FrameMaker content to InDesign, RoboHelp, or Flare, and subsequently updating the content.
- Converting existing online help as Dreamweaver files to Flare, and subsequently updating the content.
- Transcribing technical recordings and converting to FAQs or to text-based tutorials.
- Creating narrative scripts to use with math-related video tutorials.
- Developing the UI for a new module in a browser-based internal database application.
- Creating a training manual, which was used as a basis for context-sensitive help, for a Web-based internal application.
- Developing and upgrading university-level courses for distance learning (with the eCollege CMS).
- Developing an online training as part of an online Web conference (with Moodle, the open source CMS).
- Writing installation guides and user guides for networking hardware.
- Developing WinHelp help systems and tutorials for Windows applications.
- Developing help systems and tutorials as Apple Guides for Macintosh applications.
- Documenting product design development procedures.
- Repurposing content from a variety of sources and organizing that information into Internet-based courses for company intranets.
- Developing interactive training materials.
- Developing leader-led courses for software and hardware products and developing an orientation class for new engineers.
- Editing articles for technical magazines and journals.
